Nice to see Norwalk and Indianola playing each other. Should turn into a good rivalry game if they keep playing each other. They will both be in same conference now in all the other sports as well.

I know it's a challenge to do these schedules but I am surprised at the number of schools that start the year with two road games and end the year with a road game. That's tough to do. Of course, next year it'll be the opposite.

The most extreme schedule belongs to Waterloo East, who opens with two roadies and ends with two roadies. Smack in the middle of five games in the middle of their schedule are two pairs of double dip home games with a roadie at Waterloo West, who they share a field with. So essentially, Waterloo East plays two road / five home / two road. Very strange!

And I see Waterloo West gets that schedule in 2017. What did those 2 do to the IHSAA?

Actually more crossovers, PNation. There were twelve each of the last two years.

4 of these are from Ottumwa as they drop 3A opponents..adds back 2 former CIML Metro conference opponents plus old foe Newton while they reside in 4A. It won't help them in district though. Newton schedules Burlington?

I didn't quite understand Newton and Burlington either. Kinda like Des Moines North and Waterloo East. Is there some kind of history there?

Interesting article in the Burlington Hawkeye indicating the excitement Coach Shay had because he got all four of his requested non-conference games. He asked for and received Dav Central, Dav North, Dav West and Newton. His logic, according to the paper, was that this was the best opportunity to have his team have success and build some confidence going into the District schedule.

Similar approach that Jefferson took on the last schedule. They put a few davenport school on the schedule so they could build some confidence.

Orsky the first four games are still exhibition games...with 16 playoff teams 3 losses in district leaves you at home in late October. But playing in competitive games early will help create some excitement during the regular season for the isolated 4A schools

I completely understand that. If however you lose the first four games or even three or four you're not likely going to build momentum in a program that has won very few games in the last several years.

My thought with I read the comment about scheduling the Davenport schools as well as looking at the eastern conferences was, "Wow, the East side of the state is just bad at 4A football." None of the conferences on this side have much depth of quality.

I think that is an unfair and untrue statement, while the Western half of the state has won a majority of the State titles in recent years they're pretty equal as far as having your top tiers, middle tiers, and bottom dwellers.

Bett, Pleasant Valley, North Scott, CR Wash, CR Kennedy, Cedar Falls and the IC Schools are usually always pretty good quality wise, and yes while the Davenport public schools, Waterloo East, Burlington, are pretty down year in and year out.

On the Western half it's been dominated by Dowling, Valley, Waukee, SEP, Ankeny's and Johnstons but, you still have Des Moines Public schools, Council Bluffs, & Sioux City Schools that with a few exceptions have not been very good.

I'd say it's a pretty even spread

I like the fact that teams have been able to put in their requests for their non-district games and I prefer this 8 districts of six rather than six districts of 8. You're still able to schedule your rivalry games if they don't happen to land in your district, for the isolated schools they can have more local matchups even if they're against lower class opponents, and for struggling teams, they have a chance to put a few winnable games on their schedule. Also the top tier teams schedule top tier opponents which I am sure almost everyone would much rather see those games rather than a Valley play a Des Moines school for example.

Only thing I don't like with 8 districts of 6 teams each is you could potentially have a three-way tie with 5-1 teams. That means some team could be 8-1 and miss the playoffs. The 6 districts with 8 teams each would have allowed for "wild cards" and opened a spot for those teams.

That is true, that would be an unfortunate situation, with 16 teams there will be teams that make it in and those that don't that will create some controversy. Personally I liked it better with 32, sure it was watered down but every team that deserved to be there got in, but at least it will give us something to talk about come playoff time about those who got in and those who got left out
