Who are the favorites\dark horses for the upcoming seasons?

3A ICWest, City High, Johnston
DH
2A Xavier, WSR, Pella
DH
1A ICRegina, Beckman, Colmbus
DH

3A: IC West takes a hit losing a large core of its team for the past two seasons. They always seem to reload but it will be interesting to see how alot of their players do having to step out of the shadow of several graduated all-staters. I bet they have a few growing pains at first but with their track record you have to assume they pull it together to contend come post season time as they go for their 3rd in a row.

City High looks to be solid again and their coach always gets the most out of his team come tournament time. Pacheco will be dangerous but how he plays without 2 graduated D1 players should be interesting.

The team to look out for this year is CR Kennedy I think. They made it to the semis last year with a very young talented team. Jung, Sheeley, and Walker were only sophomores last year but got a ton of valuable varsity experience and were arguably some of the teams top players. Their goalie who won them a ridiculous amount of shootouts also comes back. Add in senior all-tourny team Killian Magee to the equation and I think they close the gap on the IC schools.

I don't know much about des moines schools anymore but Johnston was very successful last year finishing 3rd and hardly graduated any seniors. Freshman Elvir Ibesevic was easily freshman of the year in the state. Theyre right up there with the three teams above and I think they enter post season play on a roll.

2A: Probably a race for the No. 1 spot between Xavier and Wahlert all season per usual. A team out of the north always surprises me so a Storm Lake or a Spencer will probably make a big run in the last quarter of the season, at least I hope so. I don't know much about 2A but it would be nice to see someone other than a MVC team win 2A for a change.

1A: IC Regina. Everyone else is battling for second. Regina has the best 1A athletes (see their football team) which is essential at 1A because you aren't going to get alot of club players, the ones that do play club however are coming from a great area program (the same program that feeds IC West and IC City), and they have a seasoned coach who gets everyone to buy in to their roles. Im starting to get sick of their success but theyve got a winning formula at the moment.

Should be an exciting year.

Keep an eye out for SLPO, there going to be dangerous this year, especially come tournament time.

I went to the Iowa City High vs. Iowa City Regina scrimmage on Saturday. City came out on top 2-0. It's very early and they haven't practiced much, but it was an entertaining game. City has a lot of talent. They have an IC West transfer and an Italian exchange student who both played very well. Regina is young this year up front. They struggled to generate many goal scoring opportunities, but kept it close.
It was fun to see a couple of great soccer schools get together, despite the class difference. Iowa City is loaded with soccer talent.

My son plays with some ICW and ICH players on a club team, both schools have some great young talent being groomed through the soccer club.

Any scores on the jamboree I thought i heard on the radio that CRP beat Solon, ICW beat Regina and ICH beat MV. I wasn't able to make it darn it.

Looking around a bit I found:
West beat Regina 2-1
City beat Mount Vernon 7-0
Unsure on a final, but it looks like CR Prairie scored 3 or 4 on Solon.

I thought I heard it was 3-0 for CRP vs Solon. Thanks for the info.

City has a really good team, their newcomer who is a Fr (Gaby) is incredible.

A big match up last last as Iowa City High hosted 2013 2A Champ Cedar Rapids Xavier.
I wish I could have gone, but it looks like City won easily 6-1.
The City vs. West game this year will really be a one that shouldn't be missed.

Results from last night:

Norwalk 2
Newton 0
FT

Both goals from Steenhoek, bringing his tally to 4 goals in 3 matches (Indianola, DM Roosevelt, and Newton)

Some interesting games in eastern Iowa tonight:

Dyersville Beckman @ Clear Creek

CR Washington @ Iowa City West

West Liberty @ Mid-Prairie

Muscatine @ Pleasant Valley

Good games indeed!

I will take DB, ICW, WL and Muscy

Beckman 2, Clear Creek 0

Iowa City West 2, CR Washington 0

West Liberty 2, Mid-Prairie 1 (1st OT)

Pleasant Valley 2, Muscatine 0

I agreed with your picks and it looks like PV might have been the one 'upset'. Looks like West tightens their hold as being the top 3A school at the moment. Mid-Prairie picks up their first loss of the season in a tight overtime game. Those two teams will be really tough at playoff time. Beckman picked up a solid win on the road.

Not a real big slate of games tonight. But, Regina does make a long trip up to Decorah for their second game of the season.

I am suprised a bit by PV, but I have not seen them play either... ICW and ICH are really good this year, might see them in the championship again!

Iowa City West and Iowa City High will play on Tuesday, May 13th at the U of I Soccer Field. That will be a can't miss game.

The defending Class 3A and 2A Champs met last night when IC West High matched up with CR Xavier. Sounds like it was a really great game, with West coming back to win on a header scored with just 17 seconds left in regulation.

The link has some video highlights.

West vs. Xavier

IC Regina defeated Monticello 5-1 last night.

IC West keeps their winning streak alive with a 3-2 win over Dubuque Hempstead.

Waterloo West defeated CR Xavier 2-1 after the game went to penalty kicks.

Solon travels to Regina this Saturday for what is always a good rivalry game.

Yes, hopefully you're the only person.
Regina lost to 2A Solon 3-0 on Saurday.

They are a 1A sized school and have just two freshman on the team. They don't have the numbers to play and compete well at 2A consistently.
Should they create a 4A class for West High because you're tired of their success?

Thanks for that update. The IAHSAA website must have mixed up that score. I was surprised when I saw it.

So knowing now that Regina won, does that change your mindset? You know Solon only has 1 Freshman out for soccer...

No issue with ICW's success, they have a class program.

You just look at the metro that ICR draws from and the clubs that are available. A quick look on QuikStats shows a few other schools who are in a "larger" metro. Columbus Catholic, Des Moines Christian, etc. have good access to clubs, coaches, and off season competition. But then you have the bottom half of 1A who are schools in the boonies. Very very top heavy.

Ever since splitting to 3 classes, Regina has won the championship 4 out of 5 times. Prior to splitting to 3 classes, they didn't make a championship appearance once according to the archives.

I've seen them play a few times over the years and they have a great program too. Just feel like adding them to 2A would do service to the State Tournament. They are clearly better then most of the 2A teams in the south eastern part of the state (recently won by teams like Mt Pleasant, CCA, Keokuk) all of whom I think Regina could knock off. Just makes it more interesting overall if the Wahlert, Xavier, Regina, Norwalk, Pella, Spencer, Decorah, ADM/Grinnell/DCG teams are in the dance.

Any big games this week?
