    Updated Football Rankings - 9/27

Des Moines schools are back in class beginning the week of October 12. Does that mean they’re included in the playoffs?

    Playoff Plans

If you haven’t seen yet, the IHSAA has announced their plans for how the 2020 playoffs will work. As reported in the Cedar Rapids Gazette, it’s kind of the equivalent of three separate mini-tournaments. They‘ll first divide the classes into 16 “pods,” consisting of 2 to 4 teams and mainly set...

    Updated Football Rankings - 9/20

Xavier's offense is a good one this year, but defensively they're not as lights-out as they have been in recent years. They give up long drives at the start of games (all four games so far, with three of them resulting in scores). Grinnell is just nuts offensively. Averaging well over 500 yards...

    Boy, 2020, I don't know ...

So here's a weird oddity, brought to you by the COVID pandemic year that will not end ... Davenport Assumption is actually going to play 4A Cedar Rapids Washington this week. The Knights had North Scott on their schedule, but due to positive tests/quarantines at North Scott, the Lancers had to...

    Updated Football Rankings - 9/14

Technically I think it's 200 students "quarantined," which doesn't mean they all tested positive but that they've been in close contact with someone who has. I think I heard there were 11 positive cases, maybe?

    sept 11 football score

Yes, they are, but 2020 is ... well, 2020. Indianola's originally scheduled game was against Des Moines Lincoln, but since the Des Moines public schools are 100% online they cannot have activities. Western Dubuque was supposed to play Charles City, but the Comets were unable to play due to a...

Will there be a 2020 season?

You also miss my point - clearly outlined in my post - that total deaths in the US since April are WAY higher than normal. Do you have any explanation for that besides "COVID isn't so bad"? Maybe we SHOULD have biohazard bins everywhere, but when denialists throw punches when they're asked to...

Will there be a 2020 season?

These are good points. I can't really argue with them.

Will there be a 2020 season?

I doubt that actually happened, in any real sense. I mean, the only stories I've heard about that are "a buddy of mine said three friends of his gave up on waiting in line to be tested - then they got told they were positive! It's all a lie!" I mean, really. You have any proof of these stories...

Will there be a 2020 season?

They aren’t in school yet. That’s where the timing comes in. It may not make a lot of sense, but if you do consider the team members to be trying to stay in a “bubble” of sorts, that goes right out the window when classes start and the entire student body is mixing in the hallways. The state...

Will there be a 2020 season?

To be fair, it’s the state Department of Education that’s told school districts they can’t have activities if they’re 100% online. I mean, it sucks, but you have to grant the point - if conditions are too unsafe to hold classes in the buildings, how can you justify having non-classroom activities?

Will there be a 2020 season?

Let’s be honest about this - this doesn’t say “only 6% of COVID deaths were actually from COVID! The pandemic is a lie!” It says 94% of those who died from COVID also had other health conditions, underlying health conditions that you or I or a good 90% of all Americans have ... but conditions...

Where to find 2020 Scores on Friday nights?

I second the #iahsfb tag on Twitter, along with the team name you’re looking for. That works pretty well for my purposes. I‘m also going to try the Varsity Bound app this season (run by the same company that’s taken over QuikStats). It appears like you can select certain teams to follow, but I...

    Non-district games

Also as far as rosters go, yes, Xavier consistently gets larger turnout than a lot of other schools their size. I think their varsity roster this year is 52; Western Dubuque is showing 33 kids on their varsity squad.

    Non-district games

Maquoketa dropped to 2A this year, I think. Clear Creek-Amana had a positive case in the high school (apparently traced to a big party last weekend, go figure) and didn’t hold classes in the building Thursday. Sounds like they are going to play tonight in any event.

    Derecho Apocalypse

Yeah, I heard Lisbon's brand new press box was destroyed. Benton Community's press box collapsed onto their stands - the Bobcats are playing all their games away from home this fall (their "home" games will be at Vinton-Shellsburg and Williamsburg). Marion also suffered damage at Thomas Park...

    Non-district games

Marion has to drop their opener vs Washington, due to complications from the August 10 storm. As Reasoned said, Washington was able to reschedule with Bettendorf for Week 1. Marion will play their home games at Linn-Mar because of damage at Thomas Park. Benton Community’s press box fell onto...

    Derecho Apocalypse

Those of you who weren’t in the path of the huge storm last Monday may not realize the extent of the damage, particularly in Cedar Rapids and Marshalltown and many of the areas in between. The devastation is severe. All of Cedar Rapids’ school buildings were damaged, the three high schools...

    Non-district games

I'm not sure about the interior positions, but nearly all the stat-producers from Western Dubuque have graduated. They bring back players with about 22 varsity carries and only 8 pass attempts. Tommy DeSollar's 19 catches are most of what the Bobcats have coming back on offense. I agree about...

    Non-district games

Xavier's schedule is finalized. Non-district games hosting Western Dubuque Week 1 and at Linn-Mar Week 2. Then Clear Creek-Amana, Newton, at Oskaloosa, at Grinnell, and hosting Benton Community.
