I believe Hinton is in class 2a this summer like Van Meter. Looking at the beds they were both 2a in basketball.

Not so sure you can go by that. State is still working on the numbers as there have been a lot of consolidations. Much tougher to field a team of 9 players in baseball vrs 5 on the court for basketball. This is causing many smaller schools to consider options of consolidating programs with other schools. For the most part my guess would be if you are 2A in basketball...you will be 2A in baseball. However, those teams at the far end of the spectrums will be subject to change (getting bumped up or down) and could be classified in a different class. We should know in a couple of weeks.

According the IAHSAA handbook, here's how the the baseball classes are determined by their BEDS ranking

4A---- Largest 48 (1-48)
3A---- Next 64 (49-112)
2A---- Next 96* (113-209)
1A---- Remainder (>=210)

Hinton BED rank is 199 (169 students), Van Meter is 202 (165 students). It looks like both should be classified for 2A this year for baseball.

*Last year had 97 teams play in 2A due to one team petitioning to play up a class

Assuming no petitions for playing up a class this year and no district consolidations applying to this years baseball season:
Largest 4A = Valley (2036 students)
Smallest 4A = Norwalk (605)

Largest 3A = Epworth-Western Dubuque (577)
Smallest 3A = Union/Laporte City (294)

Largest 2A = Iowa Falls/Alden (293)
Smallest 2A = Jesup (160)

Largest 1A = North Union (159)
Smallest 1A = ?.(25 schools with less than 50 students)
