The Iowa Newspaper Association announced its 2014 All-State Baseball selections Tuesday, selecting first, second, third teams and team captains for classes 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A.
The four seniors selected as team captains are 4A ? Malique Ziegler, Des Moines East; 3A ? Weston Shaw, Algona; 2A ? Cole Jackson, North Polk; and 1A ? Hunter Embray, Twin Cedars.
Des Moines East senior Malique Ziegler excelled on the baseball field during his high school career and he was named the 4A captain largely because of his exceptional speed. Ziegler hit .500 on the season but also tallied 14 doubles, five triples and stole 44 bases, helping the Scarlets finish 74-9 over the past two seasons. The Scarlet senior also blasted five home runs and scored 64 runs in earning another first-team all-state honor by the INA. And his baseball career is not over; Ziegler will attend Division I Northern Illinois next season and plans to play in the Huskies' outfield.

Class 3A captain Weston Shaw has been the Algona catcher for the past five years; he helped lead his team to the state baseball tournament in 2010 as an eighth-grader, driving in the winning run in the sub-state final and again this season. This summer, Weston excelled on the mound with an 11-1 record in 14 games. The right-hander hurled 78 innings on the bump, allowing just nine arned runs for an ERA of 0.81 while striking out 110 batters and walking 23. The red-and-black won the North Central Conference title with 17-1 league mark and were 27-8 overall this season.

There weren't very many players ? if any ? that were more impressive at this year's Iowa State Baseball Tournament than North Polk's Cole Jackson, captain of the 2A team. The Comet senior was brilliant on the mound in helping the school claim its first-ever state baseball title. Jackson struck out 15 and tossed a no-hitter in the quarterfinals against Maple Valley-Anthon Oto and then fanned another 10 during a four-hitter against second-seeded Dyersville Beckman Catholic in the championship game. Jackson, who will play baseball and football at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, finished the season at 7-1 with an earned run average of 0.78. He also fanned 112 and held a batting average just less than .400 on the year. Jackson's lone loss on the mound came against Class 4A Urbandale and the Comets were 32-5 overall.

Hunter Embray of Twin Cedars was chosen as the captain of the class 1A all-state team. Embray, who is the catcher for the Sabers, handled a four man pitching rotation that went a combined 36-0 and helped Twin Cedars win its first-ever state baseball championship. Embray batted fifth in the powerful Twin Cedars lineup. He reached base safely in nine of his ten at bats during the state tournament. He finished the season batting .455, with 40 hits, 37 runs scored, and 35 runs batted in. He had nine doubles, five home runs, earned 26 walks, and was hit by 12 pitches. He led his team with a .619 on base percentage. Defensively, he only gave up five stolen bases in 36 games. Embray will continue his baseball career at Marshalltown Community College in the fall.
Writers making up the selection committee were: Matt Gengler, Missouri Valley Times-News; Kevin White, Omaha World-Herald; Lori Wiser, Ocheyedan Press-Melvin News; Beth Lutgen, Dyersville Commercial; Greg Grabianowski, Algona Upper Des Moines; Scott Vicker, Creston News Advertiser; Troy Hyde, Marshalltown Times Republican; Kristi Nixon, Hampton Chronicle; Perry Bell, Pella Chronicle; Mike Oeffner, Harlan Newspapers; Mike Helle, Knoxville Journal-Express; Matt Coss, Davenport Quad-City Times; Scott Spurgeon, Bloomfield Democrat; Jared Patterson, Mason City Globe Gazette; John Jensen, Grundy Register; Jeremy Koenigs, Mason City Globe Gazette; Jake Ryder, Muscatine Journal; Marty Ball, Carroll Daily Times Herald; Ross Eberhart, DeWitt Observer; Jim Sullivan, Waterloo Courier; Larry Peterson, Creston News Advertiser; Justin Rust, Waverly Newspapers; Jonathan Krueger, Perry Chief and KJ Pilcher, Cedar Rapids Gazette.

Robert Neustrom, Sioux City North, batted .540 not .466. He's a legit candidate for Gatorade Player of Year.

Agreed JNiem. Great player. That North High team is one that could go very far next season, returning everyone but one regular in Nick Norton.

Looks like NW Iowa almost got shut out on the 1A teams except for a pitcher from Gehlen and a pitcher from RSM. However when I see only ONE newspaper person from NW Iowa in attendance enough said. I am guessing there are few deserving players (2 or 3) who probably deserve to be on one of the 3 teams but due to lack of representation were sadly left off.

They have his correct BA. It is listed below. The spacing of the post makes it appear that the BA is associated with the player listed below him.

Hey Luke....on the INA 3A all state baseball team, your site has Jake Hovden of Decorah batting average at 350---Jake's average was 495. He also had near the top for the most hits in all of 3A....only 1 error on season as centerfielder. My thoughts are he deserved first team or at least second team honors...looks like if you don't play in state tournament, your season numbers and value to your team don't matter to the INA selection members. We also know their are ALOT of deserving players, oh well---on to football.
